Short Drama Apps in India [2026]: GoodShort Beats DramaBox, and Almost Nobody Speaks Hindi

· 9 min read · Market report

We read the Indian App Store for every service in our ranking on 2 October 2026. Two things came out of it that contradict the global picture. GoodShort has more Indian ratings than DramaBox — 66,703 against 54,166 — which reverses the order at the top of our main ranking of 21 short drama apps. And of the 22 services available in India, only five declare Hindi as an interface language. Two declare Tamil, Telugu or Bengali, and both of those come from the same Singapore publisher.

What the data says

India is the single largest source of readers for this site, so we went and measured the Indian App Store the same way we measured the Philippine one. Three findings.

Availability is a non-issue. Twenty-two of the twenty-three services we track returned a live Indian listing. The only absentee is Melolo, which has no US listing either and concentrates on Southeast Asia.

The leaderboard is different here. GoodShort leads India on rating volume and holds a 4.90 average. In our global ranking it sits fifth. DramaBox, first globally, is second in India and rated a full quarter-point lower than it is in the US.

Localisation is thin. Hindi appears in five of twenty-two listings. Tamil, Telugu and Bengali appear in two. English carries the rest, which works for a large part of the Indian audience and not for all of it.

The bottom six rows are noise, not signal. One rating is not a verdict, and TouchShort’s 3.67 rests on fifteen. If you are choosing from our full comparison table of all 21 apps, these are the rows to skip while in India.

GoodShort is the number one here, not DramaBox

This is the finding that should change what you install. GoodShort holds 66,703 Indian ratings at 4.90. DramaBox, which leads our global ranking and leads almost every market we measure, holds 54,166 at 4.64.

That is a 23% gap in volume and a 0.26 gap in score, in the same storefront on the same day. GoodShort is also the highest-rated app of the twenty-two, and by a comfortable margin — the next best among apps with meaningful volume is DramaWave at 4.84.

We are not rewriting the ranking on one country’s data; our scoring method weighs catalogue, real cost and app experience globally. But if you are reading this from Chennai or Pune rather than Chicago, GoodShort is the sensible first install, and our GoodShort review explains what you get for that, and the DramaBox review explains what you would be giving up.

Indians rate these apps lower than Americans do

We found the opposite pattern in the Philippines, where almost every app scored higher than in the US. India runs the other way for the biggest names.

DramaBox: 4.64 in India against 4.76 in the US. ReelShort: 4.54 against 4.69. ShortMax: 4.57 against 4.61. Playlet 4.42, Sereal+ 4.39, KalosTV 4.37 — all below their American scores.

Three apps buck it: GoodShort (4.90 against 4.90, effectively level and the highest anywhere), DramaWave (4.84) and FreeReels (4.78).

We are not going to invent a cause. A per-country gap can come from genuine dissatisfaction, from different rating prompts, or from a different mix of who installed. The practical rule is the one we always give: compare star ratings only within the same storefront. A 4.8 read in the US store and a 4.5 read in the Indian store are not the same measurement.

Five apps out of 22 speak Hindi

Hindi appears as a declared interface language in exactly five listings: NetShort, ReelShort, DramaWave, FreeReels and ShortMax.

The two biggest apps in India by rating volume — GoodShort and DramaBox — do not declare it. Neither does StardustTV, FlickReels, MoboReels, Playlet, HoneyReels, KalosTV or any of the smaller entries.

That is a strange shape for a market this size, and it is the same shape we documented for the apps with the most generous free tiers: publishers localise where they think the money is, and English does a lot of work in India. Whether a Hindi-first competitor would take share is an open question nobody has tested publicly.

Tamil, Telugu and Bengali: two apps, one publisher

Beyond Hindi it thins out fast. Tamil, Telugu and Bengali each appear in exactly two listings: DramaWave and FreeReels. Both are published by SKYWORK AI PTE LTD of Singapore.

So one company accounts for every South Indian and Bengali interface option in the entire category as we track it. DramaWave declares 24 languages and FreeReels 21 — the two widest in our ranking. If language coverage is what you need, the choice is effectively made for you. Neither is in our main ranking — we cover them on our sister site rather than here — which is exactly why this report exists: a global ranking and a national one do not have to agree. The comparison table shows what the ranked apps do offer.

It also means a single publisher’s decision governs whether a Tamil or Telugu interface exists at all. That is a fragile position for a market of this size.

What it costs from India

Store prices are set per country, and India is consistently among the cheaper storefronts. A regional pricing tracker we cited in our guide to short drama prices by country put DramaBox’s monthly-equivalent at $6.24 in India against $20.96 in Australia — a spread of roughly 254% for the same app.

Two cautions before you treat that as a bargain. First, those are third-party tracked figures, not numbers we read off your purchase screen, and tiers and promotions move constantly. Second, cheap per month is not the same as cheap per series: coin systems are where most of the money actually goes, and we unpicked that in how coin systems really work.

The rule that survives every market we have measured: read the figure on the store’s own payment sheet, not the one in the app’s banner, and cancel a subscription immediately after buying it so nothing renews by accident. Cancelling properly takes about thirty seconds and deleting the app does not do it.

What to install tonight

GoodShort if you want what India actually rates highest — 66,703 ratings at 4.90, the best score of any app in the storefront.

DramaWave or FreeReels if you want a Hindi, Tamil, Telugu or Bengali interface. They are the only realistic options, and they are siblings.

If your taste runs to Japanese rather than Chinese production, our Japanese drama app shortlist is a better starting point than any of the above.

DramaBox if catalogue size outweighs everything; it remains the biggest library in the category and first in our overall ranking, even though India rates it lower than the US does.

On iPhone specifically, our iOS-tested shortlist covers which of these behave well on Apple hardware. And if your phone has no room, three services now run entirely in a browser — see watching short dramas without installing an app.

A warning about this data

Everything above is App Store data, and India is an Android-majority market by a wide margin. Google Play publishes a single global rating and a global install bracket, not an Indian one, so there is no equivalent per-country figure to read.

That means this report describes the Indian iPhone audience, which is real but is not the whole country. We would rather say that plainly than present an iOS sample as if it were national.

How we checked

Every figure was read from Apple’s public lookup endpoint on 2 October 2026, once with the Indian storefront and once with the American one, for the App Store identifier of each service in our ranking plus Melolo and SnackShort. Nothing is estimated and nothing is carried over from an earlier reading.

It is one storefront, one platform, one day. Ratings move and listings change, which is why the date is on every number. Our scores and ranking positions are separate and are explained in how we test.

Questions

Which short drama app is best in India?

By Indian App Store data, GoodShort: 66,703 ratings at 4.90 on 2 October 2026, the highest score and the largest rating volume of the 22 services available there. DramaBox is second with 54,166 at 4.64. If you need a Hindi interface instead, the choice narrows to NetShort, ReelShort, DramaWave, FreeReels or ShortMax.

Are short drama apps available in India?

Yes — 22 of the 23 services we track returned a live Indian App Store listing, all free to install. The only one missing is Melolo, which also has no US listing and focuses on Southeast Asia. You can see the whole set in our comparison table.

Which short drama apps have a Hindi interface?

Five of the 22 available in India declare Hindi: NetShort, ReelShort, DramaWave, FreeReels and ShortMax. Notably the two most-rated apps in India, GoodShort and DramaBox, do not. Everything else ships English only.

Is there a short drama app in Tamil, Telugu or Bengali?

Two: DramaWave and FreeReels, both published by SKYWORK AI PTE LTD in Singapore. Between them they declare 24 and 21 interface languages, the widest coverage in our ranking. No other service we track offers any of the three.

Why is DramaBox rated lower in India than in the US?

It is — 4.64 against 4.76 — and so are ReelShort, ShortMax, Playlet, Sereal+ and KalosTV. We do not know why, and the honest candidates (genuine satisfaction, different rating prompts, different user mix) cannot be separated from public data. The practical consequence is that you should compare star ratings only within the same storefront.

How much do short drama apps cost in India?

India is among the cheaper storefronts: a third-party tracker put DramaBox’s monthly-equivalent at $6.24 against $20.96 in Australia. But subscriptions are not where most money goes — coins are, and their cost per episode varies per title. Read the price on the store’s own payment sheet, and see our coin systems guide before buying a pack.

Does this data cover Android users in India?

No, and that matters in an Android-majority market. Google Play publishes only a single global rating and a global install bracket, with no per-country figure, so there is nothing equivalent to read. Everything in this report is Apple App Store data for the Indian storefront.

Which short drama apps should I avoid in India?

Not avoid so much as skip: TouchShort (15 Indian ratings), StarShort (9), Veloria (1), TopShort (1), Footage and YourChannel (none at all). They are untested here by any reasonable standard, and six well-populated alternatives are free to install.

Can I watch short dramas in India without installing an app?

Yes. Three services run entirely in a browser with nothing to install, which also sidesteps storage limits on older phones. We compared all three, including the one charging three to four times more than its own sibling platform, in watch short dramas without installing an app.

Are short drama apps free in India?

Free to install, all 22. Every one opens each series with free episodes and then asks for coins or a subscription. Our ranking of the most generous free tiers measures how far you actually get before paying, which differs enormously between apps.
