At a glance — Publisher: NETSTORY PTE. LTD. (Singapore), overseas arm of Maiya Media (Chongqing) · Launched: July 2024 · Platforms: Android, iOS, iPad, Mac, Web · Languages: 17 · Price from: $19.99/week VIP; coin packs from $9.99 · Free episodes: Yes (opening episodes + ad unlocks) · Rank: #4 of 20 (provisional)

Ranking note — : NetShort entered our ranking in September 2026 at 4th place. The score reflects verified store data — 100M+ Google Play installs at 4.6★, 4.7★ on the App Store and third place worldwide by Q1-2026 downloads — offset by the least friendly pricing among the leading apps. It is provisional until our full hands-on cycle completes.

Verdict: NetShort is the largest short drama app we have added to the ranking in 2026 and, on catalog size and language reach, it belongs in the same conversation as DramaBox and ReelShort. What keeps it behind DramaBox and ShortMax rather than level with them is money: coins run roughly 70–80 per episode, weekly VIP starts at $19.99 and the single most common complaint in store reviews is the weekly billing cycle being mistaken for monthly. Install it for breadth and for non-English dubs; read the plan screen twice before you subscribe.

What is NetShort?

NetShort (store name: NetShort - Popular Dramas & TV) is a vertical short drama streaming app that launched on the App Store on 12 July 2024 and on Google Play the same month. Each episode runs one to three minutes, a series stacks 60 to 100 of them, and every cut ends on a cliffhanger. In two years it has become one of the three most-downloaded short drama apps in the world outside China: the Google Play listing shows the 100M+ install bracket, and Sensor Tower's State of Short Drama Apps 2026 report put it third globally by downloads in the first quarter of 2026 after a 196% quarter-on-quarter jump.

The app's own pitch is volume and reach. Its website advertises "45,000+ viral short dramas" and the store listing promises fresh episodes every day, personalised recommendations, playback speed controls and a "skip the intro" mode. Unlike ReelShort, which built its brand on English-language originals, NetShort's shelf is overwhelmingly Chinese-produced series that are subtitled or dubbed for export — the Chinese trade press quotes a figure of roughly 88% translated content — with a smaller but growing slate of English originals shot with Western casts.

For this review we checked both US store listings, the iTunes lookup data, the netshort.com web player, Sensor Tower's 2025 and 2026 reports and a sample of recent user reviews. Where a number comes from the company itself rather than a store or an analyst, we say so.

Who is behind NetShort?

The seller of record on both stores is NETSTORY PTE. LTD., a Singapore exempt private company registered at 36 Robinson Road with a support address of support@netshort.com. That entity was incorporated in June 2024, a month before launch, which is why some Western write-ups describe NetShort's ownership as opaque. It is not. Chinese industry coverage (Sohu, GeekPark) consistently identifies NetShort as the overseas version of Maimeng (麦萌短剧), the domestic short drama app of Chongqing Maiya Media Co., Ltd., a content studio founded in 2015 with offices in Beijing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou and Chengdu. Maiya produces its own series and licenses others, and its executives have discussed budgets of around US$200,000 per English-language original shot for NetShort.

That matters for two reasons. First, a studio-backed app tends to keep its catalog stocked, which is what we see: the App Store version history shows two to four updates a month through 2026, and the Play listing carries dated "premiere" events for upcoming series. Second, it is not the same company as DramaBox (StoryMatrix), ReelShort (Crazy Maple Studio) or the COL Group apps FlareFlow and Sereal+, so its catalog does not overlap with theirs.

Catalog and genres

NetShort's genre tags read like a map of the short drama market: Romance, Revenge, Rebirth, Werewolf, Fantasy, Underdog Rise, Karma Payback, Family Drama, Flash Marriage, Female Empowerment, Mystery and Time Travel. The home shelf is dominated by CEO and contract-marriage romance and by "comeback" plots in which a humiliated heir or ex-wife returns with a fortune, and the app leans harder into revenge and power-fantasy than GoodShort or HoneyReels do.

How big is the library really?

The 45,000-title figure is the company's and we could not count it independently. What we can verify is cadence: new premieres land daily, series typically run 68–100 episodes, and by mid-2026 the app had added an "Exclusive Originals" rail and started shipping AI-generated "manhua" dramas alongside live action. Even if the true number is a fraction of the claim, it is one of the two or three deepest catalogs in this ranking.

Originals versus translated content

Most of what you will watch is Chinese-made with English subtitles or an English dub; the store listing labels some titles "(Dubbed)". The English originals — roughly a three-month production cycle each, according to Maiya — are fewer than ReelShort's but noticeably better cast than the dubbed imports. If you strongly prefer Western casts and no dubbing, ReelShort or FlareFlow remain the better fit.

NetShort does not publish per-title view counts inside the app, so we have not repeated the "hundreds of millions of views" figures that circulate in marketing posts.

Languages and availability

This is where NetShort separates from most of the ranking. The App Store lists 17 interface languages — English, Arabic, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Portuguese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Spanish, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese — and the app pairs them with AI-assisted subtitles and dubs. Only KalosTV comes close on language count in our list, and DramaBox's Hindi advantage is no longer unique.

Device support is unusually wide too: iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs and Apple Vision Pro on the Apple side; phones, tablets and Chromebooks on Android; plus a browser player at netshort.com for watching on a laptop. There is no Android TV or Apple TV build. Regional availability is broad — the company has claimed 40+ countries — and Sensor Tower singles out Japan, South Korea and South-East Asia as markets where NetShort is a strong in-app-purchase challenger.

How much does NetShort cost?

NetShort prices, US App Store listing ( — set by the provider, vary by region and promotion)
DownloadFree (Android, iOS, Web)
Weekly VIP$19.99, $24.99 or $29.99 depending on the plan shown; auto-renews weekly
Coin packs (one-time)$9.99 ≈ 1,000 coins, $14.99 ≈ 1,500 coins, $19.99 tier also listed
Cost per episodeRoughly 70–80 coins ≈ $0.70–1.00; a 68-episode series unlocked with coins ≈ $45–50
Monthly or yearly planNot listed on the US store page at the time of review — figures quoted elsewhere are unverified
VIP unlocksNo ads, HD, offline downloads, all episodes

Two things stand out. First, NetShort's weekly plan is expensive by the standards of this list: DramaBox starts around $5.99 a week and even ReelShort's top weekly tier is $19.99. Second, there is no cheap annual plan to soften that — if you watch daily, a month of NetShort VIP costs $80–120 at weekly renewal. Coin buyers fare better only if they watch one series and stop.

The billing complaint you should know about

In a sample of recent one-star reviews, around a third are variations on the same theme: the user believed the $19.99–$29.99 plan was monthly, discovered it was weekly, and struggled to cancel in time. The App Store description does state that plans renew weekly and links to a separate auto-renewal agreement, so this is a design-of-the-paywall problem rather than hidden terms — but it is the reason we recommend subscribing only through Apple or Google, where cancellation is one screen away.

How can you watch NetShort for free?

  1. Opening episodes. Every series starts free; the count varies but is usually generous enough to know whether you like the show.
  2. Rewarded ads. Gated episodes can be unlocked by watching ads (typically prompts of "watch 2 ads" that play about three), or you can collect roughly 30 coins per ad, with diminishing returns as you repeat.
  3. Daily check-in and tasks. Signing in daily and completing tasks tops up coins; third-party guides claim up to ~250 coins a day, which we could not confirm.
  4. Promotions. The app has run "watch ads for a free binge day" campaigns and offers free titles on the home shelf.

Realistically, the ad route caps out around 20 episodes a day and the ad load — several ads per one-minute episode — is the second most common complaint. If you plan to finish more than a series a week, budget for VIP.

Those are strong numbers for a two-year-old app, and the ratings are consistent across both stores — a contrast with apps whose Android and iOS scores diverge. The recurring negatives, in order of frequency: weekly billing mistaken for monthly; three ads per episode; social-media ads promising "all free"; renewals continuing after a cancellation attempt; prices that differ between users in the same country (A/B tested paywalls); and subscriptions not restoring after a re-login. Support is by email only.

Analyst numbers

Sensor Tower reported NetShort's cumulative in-app-purchase revenue passed US$57M by April 2025, ranked it #5 by revenue in Q1 2025 after a 171% quarterly jump, and in June 2026 called it the #3 short drama app globally by Q1 2026 downloads. A trade blog citing Sensor Tower estimated roughly $15M a month in late 2025. We treat all of these as directional.

Against DramaBox, NetShort matches it on breadth and beats it on languages but loses badly on price. Against ReelShort, it offers far more content but far less of it in native English. Against ShortMax, it lacks the TV app. The practical pairing is DramaBox for value plus NetShort for a specific dub — Hindi, Arabic, Turkish, Vietnamese — that the others do not carry.

Who should install NetShort?

NetShort — frequently asked questions

Is NetShort free?

NetShort is free to download and every series starts with free episodes. Further episodes are unlocked with rewarded ads, daily check-in coins, purchased coins (about 70–80 per episode) or a weekly VIP plan from $19.99.

How much does NetShort cost per week and per month?

The US App Store lists weekly VIP plans at $19.99, $24.99 and $29.99 that renew every week; that works out to roughly $80–120 a month. No monthly or yearly plan appears on the US store page, and coin packs start at $9.99 for about 1,000 coins.

Is NetShort legit and safe?

Yes. NetShort is distributed through the official Apple App Store and Google Play by NETSTORY PTE. LTD. of Singapore, the overseas company of Chongqing Maiya Media, and it holds 4.6★ and 4.7★ ratings. The main risk is not safety but billing: plans renew weekly, so subscribe through Apple or Google and cancel there.

Who owns NetShort?

NetShort is published by NETSTORY PTE. LTD. (Singapore) and is the international version of Maimeng, the short drama app of Chongqing Maiya Media Co., Ltd., a Chinese studio founded in 2015.

How many dramas are on NetShort?

The company advertises more than 45,000 short dramas across romance, revenge, rebirth, werewolf, fantasy, family and time-travel genres, with new premieres added daily. That figure is the publisher's own and has not been independently counted.

Does NetShort have Hindi, Arabic or Turkish dubbing?

Yes. The app lists 17 languages including Hindi, Arabic, Turkish, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Japanese and Korean, with AI-assisted subtitles and dubs on many titles.

Can I watch NetShort on PC or iPad?

Yes. NetShort has a web player at netshort.com for desktop browsers, a universal iOS app that runs on iPad and Apple silicon Macs, and Android support for tablets and Chromebooks. There is no TV app.

How do I cancel a NetShort subscription?

If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, cancel in your device's Subscriptions settings at least 24 hours before the weekly renewal. Uninstalling the app does not cancel it. If you paid via the web, use the account page on netshort.com and keep the confirmation email.

Why do NetShort ads say everything is free?

Social-media ads for NetShort often promote a specific series with free opening episodes. The opening episodes are free; the rest of the series is behind coins, ads or VIP. Treat "watch free" ads as a free trial, not an all-free promise.

Is NetShort better than DramaBox?

NetShort matches DramaBox on catalog size and offers more languages, but DramaBox is far cheaper — weekly plans from about $5.99 versus $19.99 — and has more Hindi content history. For most viewers DramaBox is the better first install; NetShort is worth adding for a specific language or title.

What are the biggest complaints about NetShort?

Weekly billing mistaken for monthly, several ads per episode on the free path, renewals continuing after cancellation attempts, prices that differ between users, and subscriptions not restoring after re-login. Positive reviews focus on the size of the catalog and daily updates.

Final verdict

NetShort has earned its place in the top 20 on scale alone: 100 million installs, ratings that hold up across both stores and a language list nobody else in this ranking matches. It scores 9.3 rather than challenging the top three because the economics are the least friendly of the big apps — weekly VIP from $19.99, no annual plan, and a paywall that confuses enough people to fill the one-star column. Install it for breadth and dubs, pay through the store, and set a reminder before the first renewal.
